New to comics?

We realise that many visitors to our site may be new to the comics medium or rediscovering comics after a long hiatus. We’ve put the following Q&A together to help you better understand a storytelling medium you will find as rich as novels and film

Q. What are comics?

A. Variously referred to as comics, comic strips and comic books, the comics format as we know it today is a unique art form and literary medium that originated in the U.S. in the late 1800s. Its popularity exploded in the U.S. in 1938 with the hugely popular introduction of SUPERMAN. Ironically, it has become relatively more popular in many other countries around the world, where adults and children read it avidly. At its simplest, a comic is a series of words and pictures that is presented in a sequential manner to form a narrative.

Although many people regard comics as purely humorous or think they are meant only for younger readers, this is far from the truth. Today’s comics span a wide range of styles and genres÷you only need to browse through our Comics and Graphic Novels to see the incredible variety that we have to offer.

Q. Where can I buy comics?

A. The best place to find all periodical comics and comics-related merchandise is your local comics/specialty shop. Today, most of the large bookstore chains and even many small independent bookstores carry a broad selection of graphic novels and collected editions (compilations of previously published consecutive issues).

Comic conventions are another great place to see and buy comics, along with all sorts of events and products relating not only to comics but film, TV, and other pop culture.

Q. Where can I learn more about comics and the comics’ community?

A. Comic conventions are a great place to buy comics and other comics-related collectibles, meet industry professionals, and connect with other people interested in the comics medium. Conventions are held all over the world, all year-round and are attended by fans, comic dealers, artists, writers, and publishers alike.
